When you’re feeling the pressures of life and stress crowding in, what do you do to reset yourself? There are so many ways you can bring joy back into your day, and I want to share them with you… because we ALL deserve to feel happy & joyful in our everyday life.
One way I love to help my stress levels are by using essential oils & the power of nature. Essential oils are compounds extracted from plants. The oils capture the plant’s scent and flavour, or “essence.” Unique aromatic compounds give each essential oil its characteristic essence.
Essential oils are obtained through distillation (via steam and/or water) or mechanical methods, such as cold pressing. Once the aromatic chemicals have been extracted, they are combined with a carrier oil to create a product that’s ready for use – such as an alternative to perfume, on lava bead jewellery, or alternatively, you can use essential oils in a cool mist diffuser.
Inhaling the aromas from essential oils can stimulate areas of your limbic system, which is a part of your brain that plays a role in emotions, behaviours, sense of smell, and long-term memory. Interestingly, the limbic system is heavily involved in forming memories. This can partly explain why familiar smells can trigger memories or emotions. The limbic system also plays a role in controlling several unconscious physiological functions, such as breathing, heart rate, and blood pressure.
So how exactly do I use essential oils for stress relief?
There are MANY different oils you can choose from, and let’s be honest, everyone’s sense of smell is different. When it comes to women, and balancing your hormones as well as stabilising moods, you can’t go past floral essential oils. Oils including, jasmine, magnolia, clary sage, ylang ylang, rose, lavender, geranium, patchouli, roman chamomile & spikenard. These oils then blend beautifully with top notes of citrus, to create both a calming yet uplifting & energising blend of scents in your diffuser or in a perfume blend. If you love to soak in the tub, then adding the floral essential oils to your bathtub along with calming epsom salts is definitely a winner! When we become stressed, our magnesium depletes rapidly. By utilising epsom salts, you are replenishing your magnesium and giving your body a helping hand in fighting off stress & anxiety.
My favourite blend for the bath is lavender, clary sage & ylang ylang, then soak away your troubles. Not only will these oils help you relax, (& therefore lower your cortisol levels), but they ALSO help balance your hormones (such as oestrogen & progesterone), and as an added bonus, ylang ylang is an aphrodisiac, and having an orgasm is just another way us women can experience some stress release! *wink*
Some other ways you can naturally destress;
- Have a bath (and add those essential oils!)
- Get your feet onto the earth. Go barefoot in the grass, feel the sand between your toes, and just enjoy the feeling of the connection to the earth.
- Get plenty of sunshine. There’s a reason there’s the saying “winter blues”, because sunshine helps us feel happier! So whenever you can, get outside and enjoy the warmth of the sun on your body & brighten you mood.
- Have connection with a loved one… have a cuddle, hold hands, get a massage or even play with a pet. Physical connection helps boost oxytocin, which is our love hormone.
