Breathwork & meditation is an amazing transformational journey into yourself… and I want to share with you my story.
I’ve always dabbled in breathwork & meditation... using it when I thought I needed it. But it never really stuck. I just couldn’t fully commit to it, and never really saw the benefit of it. How can breathing help? We breathe every day naturally, right? And how could sitting still for long periods of time benefit you? I couldn’t ever stop my mind from wandering far away... always feeling like I was too busy to slow down… but that was exactly my problem! I was too busy to focus on myself.
I came across a quote that sums it up perfectly! “You should sit in meditation for 20 minutes a day, unless you’re too busy; then you should sit for an hour!”. – Old Zen Saying.
I then read a book called “Breath” by James Nestor. This book started the path of truly seeing and feeling the benefits of breathwork & meditation. James explains in his book how we have lost the art of truly breathing. By changing the way we breathe, modern research has shown that we can enhance athletic performance, rejuvenate internal organs, halt snoring, allergies, asthma & auto-immune diseases and even straighten scoliotic spines.
It has been said that meditation & breathwork can help with many things in modern day life, including:
● Managing Stress
● Aid Positive Self-Development
● Process your emotions
● Develop self awareness
● Boost immunity
● Enrich creativity
● Connect with yourself
In my own life, and learning this tool of transformation, it allows me to sit in release. Release of my stresses, my negative feelings, it allows a deep dive into the deepest parts of myself that I would never have been aware of any other way - like truly connecting with home.
I’m not going to lie, when this practice first became a daily ritual, I struggled. Struggled with the emotions that seemed to spill over. The human body is designed in a way that we store stress & emotion, and without release, negative emotions can take hold, and result in negative side effects, such as tension in the body, headaches, tears, anxiety, anger and even period problems… and I went through every one of the emotions. The release of my emotions & the stress I had been holding onto was HUGE – I cried, I was angry, I expressed every emotion to my husband… EVERYTHING I had been holding onto for what I believe to be YEARS, came spilling out into my life, and I just wanted to be left alone a lot of the time… but what happened next is what I will forever be grateful for.
For the first time ever, I was able to still my thoughts, sitting in silence with my breath. To allow my body to switch into the parasympathetic nervous system, to repair and relax without sleep. To connect with my desires, to listen to my intuition, something women are so closely intwined with. She is always there, guiding us, softly spoken, and we need to listen to her. I was finally able to fully and deeply drop into my feminine energy. The energy that was always there, tugging softly at my sleeve, and it took breathwork & meditation to be able to truly hear my own inner thoughts.
It's like plugging in the charger to an endless battery - whenever & wherever you need it, it's there just waiting for you to recharge. I like to enjoy this practice first thing in the morning, or before I go to bed, it’s the perfect way to start & end my busy days. Although I have also utilised it while traveling in the car (as a passenger, because safety), during the day when the kids are fighting, when I just need to check out of the day, and draw inwards, as it helps center and ground my energy. I’ve used breathwork for many reasons…. To energise myself before meeting clients, before doing a big workout, to feel alive in my own body. I have also used it to help ground my anxious energy, to balance my body, to sit in rest & calm before going to bed, or after a stressful situation – breathwork & meditation can be used for ANY life situation.
Knowing that I have this tool of self discovery that is accessible to me every single day, no matter where I am, is just truly mind blowing. It travels easy & is FREE once you know how. You don’t need any fancy equipment, just your body & your breath, and maybe a nice comfy spot too. I have now equipped myself to bring the power & control back within my self, my home, where my soul truly lives – and am no longer relying on others to satisfy my needs.
I want you to know… the person reading this, that you can take back control and have this power within yourself too. To be able to fully relax into your body, to be ever present in the moment. Breathwork has allowed me to be able to communicate more openly about my needs, my desires, what my self as a whole being (mind & body) truly need in the moment.
